  • Read the book in its entirety.
  • Write a 3-page report about the book (12-point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins).
  • The report must include:
    • Theme and Scripture: Identify the book's central theme and explain how it connects to the Bible. Choose at least two chapter-opening Scripture verses and explain what each verse teaches and how it shapes the chapter it opens.
    • Author's purpose: What truth is the author trying to help the reader believe or live out? Support your answer with specific moments from the story, but do not retell the plot.
    • Personal response: Describe a specific moment from your own life this month that connects to the theme. Include one truth from the book you will practice and what that looks like in your daily life.
  • Write the reflection yourself, in your own words. AI tools may not be used to write or rewrite any part of it. Your Google Doc's version history must show your work developing over time.
  • Save your work in your Bible Portfolio in a Google Doc labeled with the book's title.
  • Notify Mr. Medina that your work is ready for grading. Be prepared to discuss your reflection with him for a few minutes.

Series 1: The Back Row (Hard Questions Series)
The Back Row (Questions Series) follows the students in the back row of Mr. Alvarez's Bible class at a small Christian school in Phoenix as they finally ask the questions they have carried in silence. Across six books, honest doubt is treated as a doorway into faith rather than a threat to it. The main themes are grief and lament, the goodness and reality of God, trust in Scripture, the nature of truth, identity in Christ, and the hope of the resurrection. The books are Who Says? (dealing with death), Is Anybody There? (God's existence), Can I Trust It? (the Bible), Is It Just Me? (truth vs. relativism), Who Am I? (identity), and What Now? (resurrection and hope). Together they show that a patient teacher and a loving community matter more than slogans, and that presence often has to come before answers.

Series 2: Ordinary Saints (Bible Hero Series)
Ordinary Saints (Bible Hero Series) pairs six of Scripture's best-known figures with six modern teenagers whose lives run along the same road. Each story weaves the biblical account together with the teen's own, and every chapter opens with a King James verse. The themes are betrayal and forgiveness, integrity under pressure, courage and providence, loyalty and redemption, faith against fear, and failure met by restoration. Ordinary Saints shows that the heroes of the faith were frightened, tempted, and sometimes wrong, and that the story was held up by the faithfulness of God rather than their strength. The books are The Coat (Joseph), The Window (Daniel), For Such a Time (Esther), Handfuls on Purpose (Ruth), Five Smooth Stones (David), and Upon This Rock (Peter).

Series 3: The Long Fence (Life Lessons Series)

The Long Fence (Life Lessons Series) follows Caleb Tillman through six summers on his grandfather Amos's Arizona ranch, from age thirteen to eighteen. Each book takes a piece of ranch life and lets it carry a piece of the Christian life, and Scripture arrives quietly, the way it does in real life. The series themes include honest work and confession, dependence on the Holy Spirit, belonging and identity, lament and perseverance in a dry season, salvation and the narrow way, and grief with hope. It also traces the slow mending of a broken family and of a divided neighborhood. The books are The Fence Line (integrity and reconciliation), The Windmill (the Holy Spirit and dependence), The Brand (ownership and belonging), The Drought (faith in a dry season), The Gate (salvation and the narrow way), and The Last Post (death, legacy and hope). Taken together they form one coming-of-age arc, though each book stands on its own.

Series 4: Broken Cisterns (Idols Series)

Broken Cisterns (Idols Series), built on Jeremiah 2:13, follows six students at a Christian school. Each is digging a well of their own making, and each well cracks, until they turn back to the Spring they were walking away from. The themes are the idols that promise satisfaction, temptation and collapse, confession, restitution, and grace, with Mr. Alvarez as the thread running through every story. The books are Counterfeit Gods (followers / social media), The Scoreboard (winning / performance), The Report Card (grades / perfectionism), The Crush (romance / being chosen), The Bottom Line (money / security), and The Measure (body image / appearance). Sin has real consequences in these books, and forgiveness is real too.
